Lighting in Portrait Photography
People and Portraits week
Hello everyone,
I'm writing this tutorial of sorts, for all of you portrait photographers out there seeking advice about the lighting in your photographs. First off let me be clear in saying that I am no expert, or rather I do not claim to be, I sometimes do things in unusual ways, and my tips and advice are definitely not the only ones you should follow. This journal is just me giving you my take on how to get great lighting for your shots :)
1. Never shoot when the sun is at its highest peak.
Depending on where you live and your climate, this might vary, but I usually never shoot between the hours of 12-4 unles

How I achieve Macro
Macro Photography
I usually get asked how I take my pictures, well the answer is easy, it's just a matter of trying and practicing a lot. With this article I'll try to explain everything to do with how I achieve my photography, from the equipment to my settings and also the post-processing techniques that I have.
The equipment:
When I started a bit more seriously with Macro Photography I had my first DSLR a Nikon D3000 and the macro lens I got as a Christmas gift (nice present, don't you think?). I didn't know what I was doing when I started shooting with it but after some time and a lot of practice and pictures I started getting some decen

Modeling: Do's and Dont's
People & Portrait Photography
Here's a short piece on the do's and dont's of modeling, or rather some basic tips on how to model to the best of your abilities, and make the best out of your shootings. This advice is coming from the perspective of a portrait photographer, who has dealt closely with models of all types (amateur, professional), and who has seen the good and the bad.
DO: Look at yourself in a mirror, study your features, try different expressions, model poses for yourself. As silly as it may seem, it helps. It helps for you to see what you look like, what works for your face and body, and what does not. Practicing in front

Lenses: A Primer by isthisthingstillon, journal
Lenses: A Primer
Photography Week
Introduction
If you own a camera, you own a lens. (If you own a pinhole camera, be quiet.) Whether it comes off your camera or doesn't, zooms or has a fixed focal length, has glass elements or plastic - the lens and sensor are the most important elements of your camera set-up.
But don't tell that to your tripod head and hotshoe.
One of the most common gear-related questions we see in the Photography Forum and :#photographers: chat is, "What lens do I need to shoot [image X]?" You'd think it's an easy one to answer, but it really isn't. Today I'm going to try to explain the various things that make a lens good, and go over s

Seven Tips for (Beginner) Photographers
First knowledge, then gear
I often get asked "what is the best camera?" or "with what lens do I take the prettiest pictures?". From someone who is entirely new to photography, those aren't strange questions, though for many photographers who have been photographing for a certain amount of time it's common knowledge that no camera is the best and the same goes for lenses and any other kind of gear you could dream of. If you were to get a 3000 euro camera, but know nothing about photography, your picture will look the same as they would on a 300 euro camera.
The gear you want to get or will buy strongly depends on what you want to do with it. I

How to: Reduce noise in your photograph by Yuukon, journal
How to: Reduce noise in your photograph
I often see photographs pass by covered in sometimes a very, very thick layer of noise, and I always ask myself:
"Why did the photographer choose not to remove it? Is it because they don't know how to?"
Noise is something that, in my opinion, can definitely break your photograph. Most people love to see clear, crisp shots and if a photograph is covered in noise.. it is quite often, here on deviantArt, that your work will not be accepted in to groups just for that very reason. I am not a big fan of noise either. There obviously are occassions where "noise" works well, if used correctly, however, that is not usually called noise but "grain". L
Q: I WANT TO GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY, WHAT CAMERA IS THE BEST?
A: First off, there is no such thing as "the best camera". Everybody has different needs, a beginner photographer won't need a camera as advanced as a professional photographer. When you're just starting out, keep in mind a camera often is a huge investment, of a couple hundred euro's/dollars at least. So don't rush into any decisions, take your time to compare camera's and try to pick out one that has what you will need and fits your budget.
If you need some help on picking a camera, we, from PhotographyGuide (https://www.deviantart.com/photographyguide) are very happy to help you. All you have to do, is send us a messag

So, a few days ago I decided to ask through a poll and see if you guys were interested if I were to write about photography, how I work, and so on. I got a 100% positive outcome on that, so I decided to just go ahead and write a complete guide on photography. Considering I aspire to be a teacher one day, this is a great opportunity for me. Today, as I publish the first chapter of this guide, we start off with the basics, because these are important stepping stones in becoming a photographer!
